Birds need a reliable source for water all year round.. and even in the winter. You can help them by providing an open source of water. Bathing in winter actually helps birds' feathers protect them from the cold. The bath washes away particles of dirt that might otherwise prevent the feathers from their water-proofing work.

Bird baths can provide that water source and should be heated to help prevent the whole bath from freezing. In areas like ours where the weather can turn very cold and freeze the water in bird baths, a heater or heated birdbath can keep an area open in your bird bath.

In winter, it’ll help to put the birdbath on the south side of the house, or in the spot that gets the most sun, or against a sheltered wall. Place it no more than six feet from a tree, shrub or building, so the birds can fly to cover if a predator comes along. Continue to clean the bath as needed, and when cleaning, also clean edges where birds congregate to drink. Please take care not to use chemicals or additives to prevent the water from freezing. These chemicals are toxic to birds and can be deadly.

Fun tip: Add a tennis ball to float in the bird bath. The ball’s motion will help break up ice as it forms, keeping the water liquid more easily. The bright color of the ball will also help to attract birds' attention in a winter white landscape.

Supply winter birds with water, and do them a great service – and you might attract some really fascinating customers!
